The Work of Leaving Room

Leave room beside the question for the answer not yet formed. Leave room beside the doorway for the self who may return. The chair beside the window holds the shape of no one now; still, the evening lays one stripe of light across its empty seat. We are taught to fill the silence, to name the loss, to close the book. But some truths need an open margin, some roads begin by looking back. Leave room. The heart is wider than the certainty it keeps. What does not arrive by morning may be teaching you to wait.
